FAQ
Yes, wood naturally exhibits color variations due to factors like the tree species, growing conditions, and age. These variations can range from light yellows and oranges to dark browns and blacks.
Here's a more detailed look at why wood color varies:
Tree Species: Different tree species have inherent color palettes, with some like Oak being known for their khaki hues.
Growing Conditions: Factors like sunlight, water, and soil can influence the wood's color.
Age of the Tree: Heartwood, which is the darker inner part of a tree, is generally older and darker than sapwood, which is lighter and closer to the bark.
Natural Imperfections: Variations, including knots and sapwood, are considered part of the wood's natural character and can add to its visual appeal.
In essence, each piece of wood is unique due to these natural factors, and the resulting color variations are a testament to the organic nature of the material.
At Brookside Workshop we select or wood to provide as much of an even colour match within a particular product as we can.
The colour of wood gradually develops over time - this is part of the beauty of natural materials.
Diverse, durable, and with an enduring beauty; wood is the perfect natural material for our product range. We use three types of sustainably sourced timber for our lighting - ash, oak and walnut - and solid oak or ash for our furniture. You can request a wood sample if you'd like to compare and contrast the suitability of each finish for your home.
Ash
Ash is our palest wood and when cut thinly light emanates through the grain producing an intense glow. It has a slightly narrower grain compared to oak but like oak will darken gradually over time.
Oak
Oak is our mid-colour wood and when illuminated produces a striking contrast between the inner golden glow and darker wood outside. Used in quality furniture production it fits into many other rooms and decoration schemes. Over time sunlight will cause oak to darken and mellow. Both oak and ash are readily available in the UK and grow in the woodland around us.
Walnut
Walnut is our darkest wood. When illuminated it turns a rich golden colour, contrasting with the silhouetted dark exterior and producing stunning warmth and shadows.
Our pendant lights are supplied with a two metre ceiling kit and cable. These can shortened by either concealing the flex in the void of the ceiling rose, or by cutting the flex at the ceiling rose end. This must always be carried out by a qualified electrician. It is not possible to adjust our ceiling kits from the light fitting end.
The electrical components in all of our lights are CE certified. All of our table and floor lights come fitted with a UK plug. All of our wall lights are suitable for use in the EU and either come with a UK plug or can be connected straight to the mains supply by a qualified electrician. An electrician will be able to swap a UK plug for one suitable for the country you're in.
Our wall lights are supplied with the option of either a UK plug on a lead or a connector block for hard-wiring directly into the mains.
For the version with a plug on a lead, the mounting plate is screwed to the wall and then the wood lampshade is simply hung on the mounting plate. The light fitting is then inserted into the lampshade. Very simple and quick.
For the hard wired version, the mounting plate is screwed to the wall and the hard wire wall cable is then screwed into the connector block. The wood lampshade is simply hung on the mounting plate and the light fitting is then inserted into the lampshade. Simple to do.
Please note that hardwired lights should be installed by a qualified electrician.
